Once at the beginning of a journalism seminar at Columbia University, the professor gave a pop quiz. "Who was the gentleman whose statue stood near the entrance to the journalism school?" he asked. Not too many could answer Thomas Jefferson. Reporters need to be observant, the professor remarked.
